(virtual design contents)
소위 200세 시대에 살고 있는 우리. 발전과 함께 생각 해야할 것은 지속가능성이다. 문화와 기술 등 많은것들에 해당될 수 있지만, 나에게 가장 큰 영향을 주는 생활에서 자연과 지속가능한 삶의 방법을 찾는것에 집중 해 보았다. 자연으로부터 유래된 존재를 통해 그 해답을 찾고 싶었고, 무엇보다 많은 사람들이 관심을 가지고 함께 할 수 있는 것, 다양한 표현 방법에 목표를 두고 가상의 전시 컨텐츠를 만들어 보고자 한다.
Background
'곰팡이' 에서 연상되는 이미지는 그렇게 좋지는 않다.
하지만 그와 비슷한 맥락의 미생물, 효모 등의 그들이 가진 기능에 대해 들여다 보면 자연의 신비와 더불어 '지속가능한 것' 에 대한 희망이 보인다. 이렇게 엄청난 잠재력을 가진 미생물에 대한 사람들의 큰 관심과 더욱 많은 개발을 기대하면서 이를 다양한 감각을 활용하여 경험할 수 있는 컨텐츠를 만들어 보고자 한다.
이 프로젝트에서 디자인의 역할은 정보 전달을 더욱 효과적으로 할 수 있게 해 주는 가이드, 그리고 시각적인 아름다움이 주는 인식의 전환, 대상(곰팡이)를 다양한 관점으로 볼 수 있도록 방법을 제시하는 매개(Medium) 에서 중요하게 작용한다.
궁극적으로는 미생물에 대한 정보 전달과 인식의 전환을 통해 '지속가능한 삶에 대한 호기심과 의지' 를 사람들에게 전달하는 것이 목표이며, 실제로 내 삶은 어떠한지, 어떻게 바꿀 수 있는지 관심을 가지게 할 수 있다면 성공적인 전시가 될 것 같다.
For many decades, human beings are suffering from pollution and environmental problems.
This issues were also emphasized during the 2018 UNGA(United Nations General Assembly). Many treaties and laws try to solve the topic, but the fundamental thing still creating awareness and changing people's mind. In this Fungi project, I focused on microbial, especially Fungi, that is an emerging alternative solution to this issue. It is a way of finding a solution from what already exists. Microbes, the oldest living thing on Earth, have evolved over a long time. There are many different types of fungi, and there are many that have not yet been identified. Moreover, the infinite possibilities of fungi can be used not only to purify the polluted environment but also to develop new sustainable materials and new food resources.
However, the general perception of fungi is quite negative, due to its appearance, such as colours and texture. So, I designed this exhibition by positively changing people's think and perception about fungi and interpreting the infinite possibilities and abilities they have through visualization, in terms of the
designer's perspective.
1. Environmental issues in 2018 UNGA
2018년 UNGA에서는 환경문제를 의류, 식품, 주거 등으로 구분하여 해결하였다. 그들은 현재 우리가 겪고 있는 환경문제의 심각성을 강조하고 지속가능성에 대해 이야기했다.
In 2018 UNGA, environmental issues were addressed by dividing them into clothing, food and housing. They emphasized the seriousness of the environmental problems we are currently experiencing and talked about sustainability
아모레퍼시픽의 CSR 프로젝트로 발간된 매거진 '뷰티 인사이드' 를 통해 2018 UNGA에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있었고, 환경과 지속 가능한 삶에 대한 관심을 더욱 키우게 되었다. 또한 성수동 오르에르의 공간에서 열린 북토크를 통해 재생공간에 대한 크레이터들의 이야기를 들을 수 있었다.
Through the 'Beauty Inside' magazine, I could get information about the 2018 UNGA and had an interest in the environment and sustainable life. Furthermore, I attended a seminar about this magazine, held by a magazine company.
2. Environmental Pollution
특히 한국에서는 4대강 사업이 큰 환경 문제를 일으키고 있다. 심한 해조가 강을 더욱 오염 시켰으며, 이 사건또한 내가 환경문제에 관심을 갖게 된 이유 중 하나이다.
Especially in Korea, the four-river project, which is considered 'White Elephant', causes big environmental problems. Severe algae further polluted the river. It is one of the reasons I became interested in environmental issues.
3. Microbio(Fungi) as Solution
지구상에 최초의 생명체는 미생물이었다. 태초의 보습이며, 아직 밝혀지지 않은 종류와 잠재력이 너무도 많다.
The first living thing on the earth was microorganism. It is also the first beginning of life, and there are so many different kinds and potentials that have not yet been revealed.

It is a microbial fossil that existed 4.3 billion years ago.

Research
What is Fungi?
1. Structure
곰팡이는 효모와 곰팡이와 같은 미생물을 포함하는 진핵생물군의 종류이다.미생물의 종류는 매우 다양하며, 각각의 생김새도 다양하다.
A fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and moulds. There are many different types of microorganisms, and each looks different colours.
2. Characteristics
곰팡이를 확대해 보면 미세한 실처럼 생긴 균사체가 보인다.
생김새 처럼 매우 빠르게 퍼져나가서 넓은 범위를 장악하는 것이 특징이다. 강력한 확산성으로 생물이나 물체를 통제하고 '식민지화' 하여 부패와 부식되도록 만든다.
Zoom in on the fungus, and it looks like a fine thread. It is called a mycelium. It has the characteristic of spreading out into thread like forms and spreading out very fast and wide ranges. It is also powerful, controlling and colonizing almost every creature or object. Then corruption or corrosion begins.
3. Positive effect
곰팡이의 외형은 그다지 보기 좋지 않다. 이 때문에 인간에게는 해로워 보이지만, 실제로는 수많은 미생물 중 1%만이 질병을 일으킨다.
페니실린은 최초의 항생제이다. 그것은 푸른곰이라고 불리는 페니실륨 노타툼과 페니실륨 크라이소겐에서 추출되었다.
Penicillin is the first antibiotic. It was extracted from the phenicillium notatum and the phenicillium chrysogenum called the blue bear.
곰팡이(미생물)는 음식을 숙성시킨다. 이 과정에서 유익한 성분을 생산한다.

곰팡이는 존재 환경을 조성하는 색깔과 같은 다른 이유로 불쾌한 존재로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 곰팡이는 인간과 환경에 매우 유익한 공급원이 될 수 있다.
그들의 장점을 먼저 인식할 수 있는 방법으로 아름다운 시각적인 효과를 사용하고하자 한다.
Fungi have been regarded as an unpleasant being for other reasons such as the colour that it creates environment they exist.
However, fungi can be a very beneficial sources to humans and the environment. So I express fungi's positive and wonderful perceptions by beautifully visualize their appearance.
1. Moving Dots
> Change the perception positively through the art
이 프로젝트의 궁극적인 목표는 균류의 외모에 대한 인식을 긍정적으로 바꾸는 것이다. 또한 환경오염에 대한 해결책으로 그들의 긍정적인 면을 보여주기 위해 아름다운 예술작품을 통해 균류를 표현하고 관객의 인식을 변화 시키자는 취지로 기획하였다.
기획하는 모든 작품은 곰팡이의 특성에서 아이디어를 얻었다. 또한 작품은 공간의 실내장식 역할을 할 수 있으며 색채, 빛, 소재를 사용하여 표현된다.
The ultimate goal of this project is to change the perception of the appearance of fungi positively. Furthermore, to promote the ability of fungi as a solution to environmental pollution. So I intended to express fungus through beautiful artworks and to change the audience's perception
through it. Every artwork began with an idea based on some characteristics of fungi. Moreover, artworks can serve as interior decoration of space and are expressed using the colour, light, and materials.

하지만, 그들은 계속해서 섬세하게 움직이며 변화하고, 성장하고 있다.
The fungus in the plate seems static.
But, they continue to make delicate movements and changes, and are growing.
'Moving Dots'는 부패와 정화의 역할을 하는 곰파이의 "살아 있는" 존재의 특성을보여주는 것에서 영감을 얻은 조형물이다. 각 그룹의 유닛은 펼쳐 졌다가 다시 모이는 것을 반복하여 전시 공간에서 역동적이고 컬러플한 움직임을 감상할 수 있다.
Moving Dots is a ceiling sculpture design that is inspired the "living" fungus acting as corruption and purification.
The units of each group can repeat the movement that spreads out and then returns to appreciate the dynamic colour movement in the space.
2. Fungi Landscape
> Capturing the process of Fungi Growth
곰팡이는 온도와 시간에 따라 색상, 모양, 패턴이 바뀐다. 곰팡이의 성장과정, 주거용 확산과정, 활동하는 모습의 파노라마를 설치 작품으로 보여준다.
유리 플레이트 속 곰팡이는 다양한 종류만큼이나 다채롭다. 그 모습에서 착안하여 여러 종류의 실제 곰팡이를 모자이크 그림처럼 무늬를 만들어 빛으로
반사 한다. 아름답고 화려한 빛의 반사는 관객들에게 곰팡이에 대한 새로운 인식을 심어줄 것이다.
Mold changes colour, shape, and pattern depending on temperature and time. It shows the process of fungi's growth, spread for dwelling, and work. The process of gradually changing dynamically is expressed in artwork. Fungi on the glass plate are colourful by various species. Using them, make pattern the figure like a mosaic picture and reflect it through the light. The beautiful and colourful reflection will give a new perception of fungus to audience.
3. Observing Mushrooms (Space Interior)
곰팡이류의 하나인 버섯의 구조적 특징을 모티브로 한 공간 인테리어.
버섯의 기본적인 구조는 기둥과 그릴 로 구성된다. 전시의 주제가 되는 매개를 연상 할 수 있도록 공간에서 버섯의 형태적 특성을 녹여 보고자 했다.
전시되는 컨텐츠의 유형에 따라 전시부스, 테이블, 키오스크 등 다양한 형태로 디자인하고자 하며, 실내 조명과 벤치 등 에도 적용하려 한다.
The original parts of the mushroom structure are Pillars and Gills. I designed interior space by referring to the features overlapped with the
streamlined shape. The booth sections in the exhibition are consists of exhibition boxes, tables, and panels for information.
The organic form of mushrooms also applies to ceiling lighting and benches.
> 버섯의 하단 특성인 레이어를 모티브로 한 종이 모형. 한 덩어리를 겹을 만들어 틈새를 활용하여 곡선을 만들었다.
Small paper model making. Between the two parts, shadow effect is appeared, it was very interesting.
3. Observing Mushrooms (Space Exterior)
Look into the Gap
버섯 하단 겹의 틈새를 모티브로 한 전시장 외부 디자인. 하단 겹은 많은 곡선 층으로 구성되어 있다. 각 층 사이에 수없이 많은 포자가 숨겨져 있다는 것도 흥미로웠다. 이처럼 전시장 입구도 틈새로 들어오는 구조로 기획 하였다. 인테리어 보다는 구조적 특징이 명확하고 심플하게 보이며, 출입구 정면 벽면에 곡선이 있고, 양쪽 벽 틈새를 출입구로 활용할 수 있다.
Look Into the gap The feature of 'Gills' inspired exterior design. Gills is composed of many curved layers. It was also interesting that there were countless spores hidden between the sheets. The entrance to the exhibition hall is also designed with a structure that enter through the gaps. And it is more minimal than streamlined interior design. The front wall of the entrance has a curve and visitors can come through and out between both sides walls.
4. Contents
A. Birth
버섯의 포자는 하단 깃에서 뿜어져 나와 수분된다. 포자가 공중에 떠 있지만 너무 작아서 육안으로는 볼 수 없지만 레이저 광선을 통해 확인 된다.
'Birth' 파트 에서는 탑뷰 방식으로 버섯을 전시하고, 녹색 레이저 조명을 설치하여 포자가 퍼져나가는 모습을 관찰할 수 있도록 한다.
Spores of mushroom begin their life with spews out from the gills. Spores are floating in the air, but too small to see them. Otherwise, under the laser light, we can see them easier how they spread out. In this section, showing the birth of spores with the top view scene, and green laser lighting will help to observe them well.

B. Dwelling
버섯은 무리를 지어 산다. 우리는 서식하는 버섯을 통해 주변 토양에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있다. 이런 특성은 사람들이 마을을 구성하는 형태와 매우 비슷하다. 다양한 버섯 서식지를 관찰하면 아래 지도에 어떤 종이 살고 있는지 관찰 할 수 있는 파트이다.
Mushrooms live in groups. We can get information about the soil through the mushrooms that inhabit. This life pattern is very similar to people living in a village. Observe various mushrooms dwelling, and the map below shows which species are living.
C. Diffusion
버섯은 균사체의 신호에 따라 영역을 확장하는데, 이는 환경 변화나 오염에 대한 경고 신호를 주고받는 특성이 있기 때문이다.
버섯의 균사체가 뻗어나가 주변의 생태 정보를 수집하고 공유하는 것을 시각적으로 보여준다. 이들이 살아있고, 유기적이며, 시스템적인 생활 양태를 가지고 있다는 것을 보여주는 파트이다.
Mushroom expand their area follow the signal from mycelium, it is a warning alarm of environmental change or pollution.

1. Display Furniture
버섯의 습성과 형태적 특성에서 영감을 받아 집기를 디자인한다. 주요 키워드는 곡선형태와 깃들이 만들어내는 층 이다.
Inspired by some keywords related to mushroom, design display furnitures. Main keywords are Curved shape, Observing and Layers.
2. Intercation Artwork
> Spore firework
포자가 뿜어져 나오는 모습은 마치 불꽃놀이 같았다. 미니어처 세상을 확대해 보듯이 역동적인 그래픽과 터치 등 인터렉션이 적용된 아트웍으로 전시될 수 있다는 생각에 추후 기획 으로 아이디어를 내 보았다. 영상 효과를 위한 빔프로젝터, 연기 효과 등 감각을 자극하는 특수 효과가 함께 적용될 수 있다.
Spores spews out, and it seems like a firework under the light. It is inspired by how they are breeding, designed idea of artwork. In this artwork, it is assumed that humans are as small as mushrooms. And enjoy the spores spreading under the mushrooms like fireworks. For making it more actively, some equipment such as beam projector, smoke effects machine, spore model mediums, etc., would be needed.
